About the course

This dynamic, industry relevant course is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to start your own business and those required by employers. During the course, you will develop an understanding of the initial processes and requirements of a business start-up, knowledge of the first steps in creating a business, including the marketing, legal and financial requirements, and an understanding of how to write a business plan. Alongside this, you will also develop your problem solving, communication and IT skills including Excel and presentation software. You will have the opportunity to learn from industry experts and guest speakers from local companies in addition to attending trips and visits to enhance your experience.

Entry Requirements

3 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, or a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Modules

During the year, you will be introduced to what steps you would need to take to start a business. You will learn what the initial steps are, how to market effectively, the legal and financial considerations and how to use all of this to put together an effective business plan. 

Alongside this, you will develop your employability skills including spreadsheet and presentation software skills in addition to verbal and written communication skills. 


Assessment

The assessment methods will vary and reflect the types of communications used daily in business such as reports and presentations and will also include practical involvement in role play and group activities. 

Careers & Progression

Progress into level 3 Business or T Level in either Marketing,  Accounting or Business Administration. Alternatively, you could begin an Apprenticeship in Business to put your skills into practice in the workplace. 

 

Additional Details

Equipment Needed

You will require a folder to organise your work, writing equipment and a calculator. We also highly recommend bringing your own device, such as a laptop or tablet, to engage with the digital aspects of the course.

Equipment Supplied

Our classrooms are equipped with laptops, desktop computers and Chromebooks as many aspects of this course develop your digital skillset.

Enrichment Activities

You will enjoy industry-leading guest speakers, trips and visits to businesses and attractions. Previous trips have included Alton Towers, where learners enjoyed a white knuckle adventure followed by a meeting with the manager of the theme park, who provided key insider knowledge of how the park is run as a multi-million pound business.
