This course is designed for you if you are interested in computing, programming, cyber security, computer networks, websites or games development. It gives you the chance to explore several areas of computing before deciding which route you may want to follow.

You will begin by developing an understanding of computer science principles. This includes computational thinking, algorithms, programming concepts and the ways in which data is represented and processed.

You will study how computer systems work, including the relationship between hardware, software, data and users. You will also learn how to plan and manage computing projects, from identifying requirements and setting timescales through to testing and evaluating the finished outcome.

Programming forms a central part of the course. You will design, create and test software solutions and develop your understanding of object-oriented programming. You will also create websites, computer games, digital graphics and animation.

Cyber security and networking form another key part of the programme. You will investigate security threats, encryption methods and ways to protect computer systems. You will design and develop computer networks and learn how organisations manage systems, provide technical support and respond to users.

The course also examines the wider role of computing. You will explore how new technology affects businesses, individuals and society. You will consider issues such as privacy, security, ethics, access to technology and the business use of social media.

Assessment takes place throughout the course. Principles of Computer Science and Fundamentals of Computer Systems are assessed through written examinations. Planning and Management of Computing Projects and the Software Design and Development Project use Pearson-set supervised tasks. The remaining units are assessed through practical projects and assignments.

Your work may include software, websites, games, network designs, security plans, reports, presentations, testing records and project evaluations.
