About the course
The course develops the personal skills and qualities which you will need to start a career in the Construction industry. You will have the opportunity to choose a specialist area from construction. Our Tutors are all experts in their field with the knowledge and experience to help you start out in your career. You will work in our spacious workshops with an extensive range of tools and equipment that are used in industry. We are proud of our well-established links with employers across the area and ensure that our students are kept up to date with the latest developments in industry that will help them take the first step on the career ladder. This course also includes additional support to develop interview techniques and prepare for employment.

Course Modules
Introduction to Health and Safety in Construction
Provides a foundation in safe working practices, including the use of PPE, recognising hazards, and understanding the importance of following health and safety rules.
Introduction to the Construction Industry
Gives an overview of the construction sector, job roles, career pathways, and the basic skills and behaviours needed to work successfully in the industry.
Painting Techniques
Covers the use of brushes and rollers to apply paint systems to a range of surfaces, developing confidence in achieving a neat finish.
Painting and Wallpapering
Introduces the preparation of surfaces and the skills to apply standard wallcoverings, combining practical painting and papering techniques.
Preparing Background Surfaces and Applying Finishing Coats
Focuses on preparing surfaces and applying basic plaster finishing coats to achieve smooth, even results ready for decoration.
Mixing Materials and Applying Floating Coats
Develops practical skills in mixing plastering materials and applying floating coats to create level wall surfaces.
Construction of One Brick Walling
Provides experience in setting out and constructing a simple one-brick-thick wall using basic tools and techniques.
Laying Block Paving
Introduces ground preparation and the laying of block paving for small areas, with attention to alignment and finish.
Constructing Halving Joints
Covers measuring, marking, and cutting timber to form halving joints, developing accuracy in woodworking.
Constructing Housing Joints
Provides practical woodworking experience in creating housing joints, supporting the development of hand tool skills.
Assessment
Throughout this course you will be assessed on your work in the classroom and in our workshops. There are no formal exams.
Careers & Progression
Progression can be to any mainstream full time level 1 programme in the division in a chosen construction pathway.
Additional Details
Equipment Needed
All learners are required to provide their own personal protective equipment (PPE) for practical activities. This includes steel toe-capped safety boots, a high-visibility vest or jacket, and suitable work clothing such as durable trousers and overalls. These items are essential to ensure safety and maintain appropriate standards in the workshop and on site.
Equipment Supplied
The college will supply all tools, equipment, and materials required to complete the course. This includes brushes, rollers, paint trays, paste tables, and cutting tools for painting and wallpapering; plastering tools such as hawks, trowels, floats, buckets, and mixing equipment; bricklaying tools including trowels, spirit levels, lines, and profiles; block paving tools such as shovels, rakes, and compacting equipment; and woodworking tools including saws, chisels, mallets, clamps, and measuring equipment. A full range of construction materials will also be provided, including paints, primers, wallcoverings, plaster, sand, cement, bricks, blocks, timber, and fixings, ensuring learners have everything they need to develop practical skills across the trade areas.
Enrichment Activities
You will have the opportunity to be entered for the national competition Skillbuild. Success may lead to entry into international competition at Worldskills. You will have the opportunity to visit a wide range of manufacturing and industry sites to see the development and use of state of the art equipment and materials.
