About the course
This course is for learners looking to pursue a career in the Construction industry. The course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to support your progression into employment. This programme will provide you with the foundation knowledge and skills to underpin a career in the construction industry via the Painting and Decorating route. You will practice a wide range of practical disciplines, underpinned by supporting theory studies, with a focus on Health and Safety and Building Principles. You will be assessed by two external exams and several internally marked assessments linked to underpinning core subject knowledge. You will also carry out practical assessments in our excellent workshop facilities supported by our enthusiastic and knowledgeable tutors. This course will help support your progression to an Apprenticeship.

Course Modules
Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
Introduces the basics of health and safety, including hazard awareness, PPE, and welfare responsibilities to ensure safe working practices on site.
Principles of Building Construction, Information and Communication
Covers the fundamentals of construction, key terminology, building methods, and the use of drawings and information to support practical work.
Erecting and Dismantling Access Equipment and Working Platforms
Provides an introduction to safely setting up, using, and dismantling basic access equipment and working platforms.
Preparing Surfaces for Decoration
Develops basic skills in cleaning, filling, sanding, and priming surfaces to prepare for paint or wallcoverings.
Applying Paint Systems by Brush and Roller to Non-Complex Areas
Focuses on applying paint systems with brushes and rollers to simple areas, developing accuracy and finish.
Applying Foundation and Plain Papers
Introduces the techniques for preparing, cutting, and applying foundation and plain wallcoverings to walls and ceilings.
Producing Specialist Decorative Finishes
Covers basic decorative techniques such as sponging, rag rolling, and stencilling to create simple specialist finishes.
Sources of General Information
Encourages the use of key resources and reference materials to support learning and understanding of the trade.
Assessment
Students will be assessed on a range of practical skills with a practical end test. Additionally students will sit a range of modular exams linked to each of the theoretical elements of the programme.
Careers & Progression
On successful completion of this course you may progress to a Level 2 course or to an Apprenticeship in a trade related area. When you have completed your further studies other courses that are available include Level 3 Construction courses and University study. Careers that this course may lead to include a range of roles within the Construction industry, or to the of study professional qualifications that could lead to becoming a site-supervisor, or could lead to a career in construction management.

Equipment Needed
You are required to provide appropriate safety boots.
Equipment Supplied
The college will supply all essential tools, equipment, and materials needed to complete the course. This includes brushes, rollers, paint trays, paste tables, cutting tools, filling knives, sanding equipment, and spirit levels, along with access equipment such as steps and mobile towers for safe working at height. A range of paints, primers, wallcoverings, specialist decorative materials, and colour mixing resources will also be provided to support the development of practical skills and high-quality decorative finishes.
Enrichment Activities
You will have the opportunity to be entered for the national competition Skillbuild. Success may lead to entry into international competition at Worldskills. You will have the opportunity to visit a wide range of manufacturing and industry sites to see the development and use of state of the art equipment and materials. You will also benefit from a wide range of guest speakers to enrich the curriculum.
