Learning Development Team
The Learning Development team is here to help enable learners with additional needs to reach their full potential by supporting them throughout their learning journey at college.
For any student with a special educational need, specific learning difficulty or disability, our friendly and passionate team can provide strategies, resources, and tools to enable them to develop independence and resilience, empowering them to succeed in their next steps within education and employment.
We have skills and expertise within the team in supporting a wide variety of learning needs or disability including:
- Autism (ASD/ASC)
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Moderate Learning Disabilities (MLD)
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
- Hearing Impairment (HI)
- Visual Impairment (VI)
- Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)
Learners with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
We deliver a wide range of support depending on a learner’s specific needs. Examples of support on offer can include:
- One-to-one support
- Targeted numeracy and literacy support
- External support from specialists in a variety of areas including Autism, ADHD, VI, HI & SpLD
- Social Skills & Study Skills workshops to promote independence
- Support and guidance in using assistive technologies such as laptops, Speech-to-Text software and reading pens
- Assessments for Exam Access Arrangements
- In-class strategies and resources to support engagement
- Transitional support when making adjustments to college life
- Any other reasonable adjustments required to support you to actively engage in college life.
Exam Access Arrangements
We offer a wide variety of support for learners during formal assessments and examinations at all levels of academic qualification. Following a robust and thorough assessment with one of our qualified assessors we will produce a report detailing recommendations of arrangements agreed with the young person to support them in exams.
Arrangements that can be assessed for may include:
- Extra time
- Smaller or separate rooms
- Supervised rest breaks
- Prompter
- Human or computer reader
- Reading pen
- Coloured paper or overlay
- Ear defenders
- White noise machines
- Tangle toys
- Stress balls
Turning Points
Turning Points is an alternative study programme for key stage 4 learners aged 14-16 who are not engaged in education, in employment or training.
Learners work with specialist tutors to develop their personal, life and study skills, and experience the curriculum and activities in their chosen academic or training area to develop their self-esteem and motivation.
